How We Built Cosmic Factions: A Web3 Game Development Case Study
An in-depth look at the technical and creative decisions behind Cosmic Factions — our most ambitious mobile game project to date.

Introduction
When the team behind Cosmic Factions approached us with their vision for a deep space strategy game with genuine asset ownership, we knew we were looking at one of the most technically ambitious projects in our studio's history. This case study walks through the key decisions, challenges, and solutions that shaped the final product.
The Brief
The client's vision was clear: create a mobile strategy game that felt as polished and fun as the best traditional mobile games, while integrating blockchain technology in a way that felt natural rather than forced. Players should be able to own their ships, trade them on open marketplaces, and carry their assets across future games in the same universe.
Technical Architecture
The core game was built in Unity 2022 LTS, chosen for its mature mobile toolchain and excellent Photon Fusion integration for real-time multiplayer. The blockchain layer was implemented on Polygon, selected for its low transaction fees and Ethereum compatibility.
One of our key architectural decisions was to abstract the blockchain layer completely from the core game logic. Players who don't care about NFTs experience the game identically to those who do — the ownership mechanics are an opt-in layer rather than a requirement. This decision proved critical for accessibility and app store compliance.
Art Direction
The visual style evolved through three distinct phases. We initially explored a realistic sci-fi aesthetic, but user testing revealed that players responded more strongly to a stylized approach with bold colors and clear silhouettes. The final art direction draws inspiration from classic space opera aesthetics while maintaining a distinctly modern feel.
The ship designs were created in Blender, with each of the 200+ ships requiring custom UV mapping and LOD (Level of Detail) variants for mobile performance. The team developed a custom shader pipeline to achieve the distinctive glowing engine effects that became a signature visual element of the game.
Multiplayer Architecture
Real-time multiplayer for a strategy game presents unique challenges. Unlike action games where milliseconds matter, strategy games require authoritative state management and careful handling of concurrent actions. We implemented a custom state machine on top of Photon Fusion that ensures consistent game state across all clients while maintaining responsiveness.
Results and Lessons Learned
Cosmic Factions launched to strong reception, with 50,000 downloads in the first month and a 4.6-star rating. The NFT marketplace saw significant early trading volume, validating the ownership mechanics.
The most important lesson was the value of keeping blockchain mechanics optional. By not requiring wallet connections to play, we maintained accessibility while still offering genuine ownership to players who wanted it. This approach should be the template for future Web3 game development.
